About this event
Speaker: Dr. Victor Donnay, Bryn Mawr College Title: Incorporating Sustainability Topics into Math Courses”
Abstract: For the past 15 years, Professor Donnay has taught a course called Math Modeling and Sustainability in which students learn how to use mathematics to analyze issues of sustainability. This course has a community-based learning component in which teams of students work with community partners to analyze a problem of interest to the partner. In this talk, Donnay will outline a range of options for including sustainability topics in math courses: (i) adding a sustainability focused unit that illustrates a standard topic in an existing course; (ii) using sustainability as the theme for an entire course on math modeling; and (iii) having a community-based project component in which students apply their knowledge to address an authentic problem of relevance to their university or local community. No previous knowledge is assumed. All are welcome.
The KSU Mathematics Colloquium is a seminar series that brings in researchers from other universities to present results on all areas of mathematics. The talks are targeted at general audiences of students and professors. Faculty and students are welcome to the Department of Mathematics for tea before the lecture from 2:00 to 2:30 pm.
