  • Alpharetta’s The Cooler ice rink is set to close after 28 years — it will become a pickleball club as owner John Bardis points to high costs and rising interest in the sport. Local hockey players and figure skaters face losing their rink — they are seeking new venues with hockey tryouts planned at the end of April.  FOX 5 Atlanta

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Georgia Senate Children and Families Committee passed a bill that will ban personal cell phones in class for public school students in kindergarten through eighth grade—school devices and emergency calls will be allowed. The vote was four to one and local school districts will set policies for device storage and consequences for misuse.  WSB-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Sen. Nabilah Islam-Parkes sent a letter to Insurance Commissioner John King asking him to investigate high insurance premiums after studies showed Georgia drivers pay about $800 more than the national average. King replied he will not start an investigation because it would be too costly—supporting his view with data from a Florida report on hurricane-related losses.  Atlanta News First

HEALTH NEWS

  • Steve Cory of the Rotary Club of North Fulton is teaching residents CPR and AED use to save lives during cardiac arrests (he held a panel at Alpharetta High for 70 students and worked with local fire departments). He has trained 200 residents so far and now invites survivors to share their stories.  Appen Media
