EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teacher Appreciation Week gives teachers free food and discounts as a thank you for their hard work. Local restaurants and stores offer special deals when teachers show a valid ID between May 6 and May 12—each offer has its own terms.  WSB-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday, the Convention and Visitors Bureau voted unanimously to fund a feasibility study that will review whether the North Point site can support a professional hockey team—developers have already approved funding and Mayor Gilvin said the city aims to make the property a premier venue for the sport.  WSB-TV
  • Alpharetta City Council approved a contract with the North Atlanta Football League on May 5 to offer tackle and flag football and cheerleading for kindergarten to fifth-grade youth. The agreement came after tense discussions that changed the league board to include six Alpharetta residents on its 12-member board — it also lets the league use two city fields at North Park.  Appen Media

  • Aetna will exit the Affordable Care Act marketplace next year — 107,000 Georgians with Aetna policies must choose a new carrier this fall as state officials monitor federal subsidy decisions that could affect health care costs.  The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
  • Teacher Aleah Irvin of Autrey Mill Middle School in Johns Creek marked her one year anniversary since an emergency left her with severe chest pain and led to a life-saving heart surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago—she recovered in several months and has not experienced a flare-up since.  FOX 5 Atlanta
