- ➤ Over the weekend, a group of people broke into cars at a local grocery store—leaving victims feeling violated and urging police to solve the string of break-ins. FOX 5 Atlanta
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A Code Orange air quality alert went into effect Thursday in several North Georgia counties as stagnant weather trapped pollutants+ozone levels reached 115, posing health risks to children and those with heart or lung disease. Residents are advised to reduce outdoor activities until air quality improves. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
- ➤ On June 26th, the American Meteor Society received 100 fireball sightings from across Georgia, North and South Carolina, and Tennessee+many reports came from metro Atlanta, with witnesses also hearing a loud boom. The National Weather Service detected a clear sky streak near the North Carolina and Virginia border before noon+ authorities say more meteor fragments may be seen while no landing site has yet been identified. - ➤ Atlanta News First Investigates' series 'In Plane Sight' exposed how law enforcement seized cash from airline passengers and led the DOJ to end the practice — the team won an Emmy during a New York City ceremony on June 25. Atlanta News First
- ➤ A federal judge blocked a law that would have required social media companies to verify user ages in Georgia—she ruled the measure violates free speech rights and will not take effect as planned. A spokesperson for Attorney General Chris Carr said the state will appeal the decision to protect children online. Atlanta News First
- ➤ On June 11, Forsyth County boards approved a funding plan for The Gathering at South Forsyth, a $3 billion project with offices, shops, homes, a hotel and a sports arena that will use a $225 million bond if an NHL team is secured—details that mark a major step in the project’s development.
