Good morning, Alpharetta. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 7th of August.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Two new murals on Alpharetta’s Alpha Loop were unveiled on Aug. 4, with one showing tangerine koi fish and the other a flock of birds amid lavender clouds—installed on two bridges near the Alpharetta Branch Library. City Councilman Donald Mitchell, who funded the project with over $20,000 from his council stipend, said the art evokes personal memories while artist Alice Stone-Collins hopes it will spark community reflection.  Appen Media

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Moody’s Analytics report found a national housing shortage of 2 million homes, with Georgia facing a deficit of about 35,000 rental units and 41,000 owner occupied homes—conditions that hit the market for middle income earners hardest. Analysts say rising building costs, strict zoning, and local opposition may worsen the gap if new construction does not pick up.  The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fulton County Board of Commissioners voted Wednesday to keep the countywide property tax rate flat at 8.87 mills after a public outcry over a proposed 11% increase (the decision comes as officials address unspent personnel funds and rising costs from a federal consent decree for jail improvements).  The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials in DeKalb and Fulton counties reported the first West Nile virus positive mosquito samples of the year, including traps in Alpharetta—no human cases have been reported so far. Officials will treat affected areas with larvicide and advise residents to remove standing water to reduce mosquito growth.  FOX 5 Atlanta
