Good morning, Alpharetta. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 2nd of May.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • UPS from Sandy Springs is set to lay off 20,000 workers and close 73 facilities—prompting labor leaders and economists to worry about the impact on metro Atlanta's economy.  FOX 5 Atlanta

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The seasonal burn ban is in effect from May 1 through September and covers metro Atlanta and most of North Georgia. Chief Meteorologist Brad Nitz said the ban helps protect air quality because burning yard debris releases pollutants—chemicals that with heat and sunlight form harmful ground-level ozone.  WSB-TV

FINANCE NEWS

  • Georgia taxpayers had until midnight on May 1 to file their returns after an extension was granted due to Hurricane Helene, and those who missed the deadline needed to request an extension to avoid penalties. The extension allows affected filers until Oct. 15 to complete their submissions using IRS Form 4868—important steps for preventing future fines.  FOX 5 Atlanta

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City leaders launched a new tax relief program (announced on May 1) to help seniors avoid losing their homes because of rising property taxes. The affordable housing initiative (aimed at preventing displacement) will provide financial relief to at-risk homeowners.  Atlanta News First
  • NetChoice filed a lawsuit in federal court in Atlanta on Thursday against Georgia's law that will require parental consent for kids to use social media starting July 1—state officials said they will defend the law to help keep children safe while NetChoice argues it breaks free speech and due process.  WSB-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former St. Francis High School basketball star Maya Dodson had her #15 retired on Wednesday during a school ceremony that honored her role in winning state titles in 2015 and 2016 (she now plays professional basketball in Spain).
